TREND IN FOCUS: SPACEX’s STARSHIP LAUNCH

One of the biggest space-related news stories in April was the test launch of SpaceX’s massive Starship vehicle. After months of anticipation, the test finally took place on April 20. Although the Starship tumbled and broke apart a few minutes into the flight, viewers had a positive reaction overall. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson even congratulated SpaceX on Twitter: “Congrats to SpaceX on Starship’s first integrated flight test!” Josef Aschbacher, Director General of the European Space Agency, also praised the company.

SpaceX had stated that the purpose of the uncrewed test was to collect data by sending the Starship on a long suborbital trajectory, splashing down near Hawaii 90 minutes after liftoff. The data collected would be used to improve the vehicle's design and technology for future use. For example, SpaceX’s webcast showed that several of the 33 Raptor engines in the Super Heavy booster did not appear to be firing about a minute after liftoff. The cause of the engine issues has not been officially stated yet, but some speculate that it might be due to debris from the launchpad hitting and damaging the engines. However, this is just speculation.

Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, has said that the company has been working on a “massive water-cooled steel plate” that would go under the launch mount and serve as a kind of flame diverter. The launch pad currently lacks a frame trench or other diverter system commonly used to channel exhaust away from the pad. Musk has further explained that the plate was not ready in time for the test. The company believed that the pad could survive the launch intact, but this test showed otherwise. Despite the setback, several other Starship and Super Heavy vehicles are in various stages of development. The company has already made some design changes based on the work done on this vehicle. With this in mind, Musk hopes to be ready for another launch in one to two months, although some see this as an aspirational target. According to a CNBC article, SpaceX plans to invest $2 billion in Starship in 2023.

The Starship launch is unique because of the immense size of this vehicle. SpaceX’s Starship is the tallest and most powerful rocket ever built, capable of producing more thrust on liftoff than any other rocket in history, including NASA’s giant Space Launch System and the Saturn V that took astronauts to the Moon. When stacked on top of each other, Starship and Super Heavy stand 394 feet tall. That’s nearly 31 feet taller than the Saturn V, the next-tallest rocket ever built.
